March roars in like a lion, with plenty of events starting immediately, as many destinations put on their version of a Mardi Gras celebration, like K-BAY Mardi Gras Festival (Feb. 28, Mar. 1) in Kingsland, Ga., Texarkana (Ark.) Mardi Gras (Mar. 1), Carnegie Carnival (Mar. 1) in Decatur, Ala., and New Bern (N.C.) Mardi Gras Parade (Mar. 1).
This month is also a big deal for foodies with such festivities as Charleston (S.C.) Food and Wine (Mar. 5 - 9), Whiskey Warmer (Mar. 7) in Memphis, Tenn., Highland County (Va.) Maple Festival (Mar. 8- 9, 15 -16), Amite (La.) Oyster Festival (Mar. 14 - 16), Hermann (Mo.) Wurstfest (Mar. 21 -23), Feast Wilmington (N.C., Mar. 24-30), and UNwineD (Mar. 28 - 29) in Panama City Beach, Fla.
The arts also play a significant role in March, with Joye in Aiken (S.C., Mar. 7 -14), the Orange Beach (Ala.) Festival of Art (Mar. 8 - 9), the Blooming Arts Festival (Mar. 21 - 22) in Linden, Tenn., the West Virginia Comedy Festival (Mar. 21 -22) in Clarksburg, the Bayou City Art Festival (Mar. 29 -30) in Houston, Texas, and the Deland (Fla.) Outdoor Art Festival (Mar. 29 - 30).
In a class by itself is Macon, Ga.'s International Cherry Blossom Festival (Mar. 21 - 30).
And, of course, don't forget about St. Patrick's Day, which includes events such as Dublin's (Ga.) St. Patrick's Day Festival (through Apr. 5), St. Patrick’s Day Festival (Mar. 14 - 16) in Shamrock, Texas, Emerald Isle (N.C.) St. Patrick’s Day Festival (Mar. 15), the World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade (Mar. 17) in Hot Springs, Ark., and Hal's St. Paddy's Parade and Festival (Mar. 22) in Jackson, Miss.
