Ah ... October is here! You know what that means, right? Looks both ways, leans in and frantically whispers, the holidays will be here soon.
Oops, we didn't mean to scare you, or maybe we did since it is October.
Anyway, fall festival season is underway, and there is so much to do in the South right now ~ pumpkin patches, corn mazes, sunflower fields, apple picking and fairs, such as the Texas State Fair in Dallas through Oct. Then there are festivals and events, like Festivals Acadiens et Créoles in Lafayette, La., Oct. 11 - 13; Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach, Fla, Oct. 17 -20; and Natchez (Miss.) Balloon Fest, Oct. 18 -19. No wonder January is slow; everyone needs time to recover from the busyness of the -Ber months.
Fall is all about comfort, and what tends to be comfort to many? Food. Delight your appetite at festivals like the Birmingham (Ala.) Greek Festival, Oct. 3 -5; Bourbon on the Banks in Frankfort, Ky., Oct. 3 -5; Banana Pudding Festival in Centerville, Tenn., Oct. 5-6; Baytowne Wharf Beer Fest at The Village at Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin, Fla., Oct. 11-12; Gumbo Cook-Off in New Iberia, La., Oct. 12 -13; Loris (S.C.) Bog-Off Festival, Oct. 19; Oak Street Po-Boy Festival in New Orleans, Oct. 27
Don't forget about the Oktoberfests happening throughout the region. Helen, Ga.'s is going strong through Oct. 27. There's also Cullman (Ala.) Oktoberfest, Oct. 3 - 5; Nashville Oktoberfest, Oct. 3 - 6; Oktoberfest of Palm Beaches, Fla., Oct. 11 -13 and 18 -20; Richmond (Va.) Oktoberfest, Oct. 18 - 19.
Get a jump start on holiday shopping at RiverARTober in San Antonio, Oct. 5 -6; Bossier City (La.) Makers Fair, Oct. 12; Falls Arts in the Park in Blue Ridge, Ga., Oct. 12 -13; War Eagle Craft Fair in Hindsville, Ark., Oct. 17 -20; and Kentuck Arts Festival in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Oct. 18-19.
October also ushers in gatherings like Cruisin' the Coast in Biloxi, Miss., Oct. 6 - 13; Wire and Wood in Alpharetta, Ga., Oct. 7- 8; Silobration in Waco, Texas, Oct. 10 - 12; and Chuck Fest in Lake Charles, La., Oct. 19.
